A Voice Restored Through Community Leadership

Location: Bamenda, North West Region

For years, Esther (name changed) endured domestic violence in silence, believing she had nowhere to turn. Through one of WA's community-based Gender and Human Rights programmes, she participated in awareness sessions that helped her understand her rights and introduced her to local protection and referral services.

With support from trained community volunteers and local leaders, Esther accessed counselling, legal guidance, and joined a women's support group where she rebuilt her confidence and sense of purpose.

Today, she lives free from abuse and serves as a peer advocate within her community, encouraging other women to speak out against gender-based violence and seek support. Her journey demonstrates the power of community-led action and reinforces WA's belief that lasting change begins when women are empowered to become leaders of their own transformation.

Impact

  • Improved access to protection and referral services.
  • Increased awareness of women's rights within the community.
  • One survivor empowered to become a community advocate for change.
